Exhibiting Artist

Francis Friesen

Artistic Creativity is a gift that Fran Friesen feels blessed to enjoy and to share. It is expressed in every area of her life in various arts and crafts and painting. She first started painting when she was in her early teens. Although there were intervals of pauses as she got her nursing degree, raised a family and cared for family members, painting always came to the fore, exploring her art in acrylics, watercolour and mixed media.

She has done murals in Jasper, Whistler and for Expo ’92 in Spain. Recently she was asked to restore her 1988 painting on a B&B in Whistler that Sarah Richardson featured on HGTV.
At midlife she went back to school to attain her BFA majoring in painting and clay. In the last 6 years her medium of choice has mostly been Alcohol Inks and more recently abstract mixed media work as well.

“As a child I loved wandering alone through the forests, meadows and ponds on our family farm. How excited I was to see the first wild flowers emerge in spring, see the trees form new fresh buds. That feeling I breathed in from nature still brings me peace today. I loved helping my Mom in her flower garden and love gardening to this day.

When I discovered Alcohol Inks in 2016, looking online for inspiration to move toward abstraction I was mesmerized by the fluidity and the vibrant colours of the inks. From my first attempt with this medium I was hooked! It does have its challenges! Trying to control it is much like training a wild horse. One has to know when to let it run free and when to hold it back. I work mostly on Yupo Paper and also on tile and textured mediums.”
